A Brief History of WPX Hosting Services
WPX Hosting is the brain child of Terry Kyle, an Australian dude who now lives in Sofia, Bulgaria. He co-founded WPX Hosting in 2013 and is CEO.
Having been an online entrepreneur since around 1998, Terry had tried pretty much every hosting company out there before 2013. At least twice. And his overall experience was one of frustration.
In particular, Terry was disappointed by the following:
- Lack of infrastructure by hosting companies, led to “cheap hosting plans” with very few features. To get more features, you would have to accept an “upsell” from the hosting company.
- A lack of fast and reliable customer support to help users in a timely manner.
- Admin panels that are difficult for ordinary people to understand and use.
- Slow websites as a result of slow servers.
- Lack of flexibility in plans and pricing. In particular, lack of monthly price plans and a refusal to accept payments through PayPal.
So in December 2013, WPX Hosting (the name was changed in October 2016) was launched. It had a clear mission to completely change the customer experience in WordPress hosting. Terry wanted to give people like you much more time to actually run your online business and enjoy your life. He felt that you don’t need to be a Systems Administrator or an IT engineer to have a fast website.
WPX Hosting is based in central Sofia, Bulgaria where they have over 70 staff members.
Server Locations
As at November 2019, WPX Hosting had 3 data centers globally. Their Australian datacenter is located in (Alexandria) Sydney, Australia while their UK datacenter is located in London. Their US location is in the world’s largest datacenter: Chicago’s Lakeside Datacenter!
The WPX Hosting Review
Now to the review itself. Let’s take WPX Hosting for a test drive to see how good it is.
WPX Cloud
Essentially, the WPX Cloud is WPX Hosting’s super fast, hand-built Content Delivery Network (CDN) with over 20 ‘end points’ around the world.
What is CDN?
Put simply, using a CDN is like having a mini-server near any of your website or blog visitors to help load and run your website faster and more efficiently for them. It even works for visitors from the other side of the world to where your server is located.
For example, let’s say that you’re a plane spotting photography blogger based in London, and your website is hosted with WPX in their London data center.
That site will load well across Europe but plane spotters visiting your blog from Australia, Africa, Asia and North America will find that your website is slower to load for them.
This is because your blog’s content (images and text mainly) is being retrieved from one of their London servers and sent all the way across the world to visitors outside Europe.
However, with CDN installed, the CDN copies your popular content to servers around the world to benefit your site visitors from far-away locations.
So whether your visitors are from Toronto, Sydney, Johannesburg, Lagos, or Tokyo, they’ll see your blog content from a fast local server and not from the other side of the world.
Using the WPX Hosting Cloud CDN, the speed increase for visitors to your blog or website from around the world is simply dramatic, to put it mildly.
Uptime
Uptime is the amount of time that a service is available and operational. Uptime is generally the most important metric for a website, online service or web based provider and is expressed as a percentage such as ‘99.9%’. For example a 99.9% uptime equates to 43 minutes and 50 seconds of downtime.
WPX Hosting promises 99.95% uptime for all customers. And because everyone of their price plans comes with CDN, the Uptime is even higher in many cases.
WPX Hosting uses cache, CSS, JavaScript, and cookies to optimize the performance of their servers. This results in better performance and speed for their many customers.
Free Malware Removal
Malware (short for malicious software) is any software intentionally designed to cause damage to a computer, server, client, or computer network. A wide variety and types of malware exist. They include computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, adware, rogue software, and scareware.
Ensuring that your site remains safe is of paramount importance to WPX Hosting. That’s why they guard all the sites they host with Enterprise-level DDoS Protection, daily Malware scans, application firewalls, spam protection, and even WHOIS Privacy.
Site security is of course primarily the responsibility of the site owner. That is why WPX Hosting recommends the following security plugins:
- Wordfence
- Sucuri, and
- iThemes Security plugins
These plugins are free and can be easily installed onto your WordPress website via the Plugins tab on your website’s WordPress Dashboard. However, please be aware that Wordfence can slow down larger websites if scanning intervals are too frequent. It can also conflict with Thrive Architect, if that is your page builder.
However, WPX have done everything possible from the hosting side to provide maximum security. If there are still serious gaps in your defences, then your site may be left open to attack. Please note that having weak passwords, no Captcha on login page, as well as using pirated plugins will provide hackers with an entry point into your site.
Malware removal is not a service that many hosting companies provide. And certainly not for free.
However, the good news is that WPX Hosting now provides free Malware Removal if your site is hacked. Amazing, isn’t it?
Free Malware Removal Service
WPX Hosting’s new Malware Removal service is designed to work alongside their existing daily Malware scanning to help keep any attackers at bay. This is a brand-new service and will not cost their customers anything extra.
As far as we know, WPX Hosting is the only hosting company in the world to provide Malware removal for free, as well as Domain Privacy, and DDoS Protection!
WPX customers are NOT charged for this daily removal of malware.
What is Not Covered in WPX Hosting’s Daily Malware Scans and Removal?
Unlike some hosting companies, WPX does not automatically update the following to the to the latest versions:
- WordPress
- WordPress themes
- WordPress plugins
These updates are your responsibility as the Webmaster of your site or blog. The reason for this is simple. From experience, updating WordPress, themes or plugins can break websites and cause sites to go down due to conflicts or incompatibilities. So they’re best left to you.
Here is a tip that can help you.
It’s best practice to always keep WordPress, your themes and all your plugins updated to the latest versions, regardless of what WPX is doing to protect your sites.
The Security Measures in Place By WPX Hosting So You Don’t Need Security Plugins Like Sucuri or Wordfence
WPX has these security measures running 24/7 for all sites hosted with them:
- Custom and constantly updated WAF (Web Application Firewall)
- Enterprise-level DDOS protection by Incapsula
- Full daily system-wide malware scans
- Full daily system-wide malware/malicious file removal
- Cleanup of malicious redirects, backdoors and script injections
- Daily updates to server security rules (see above)
- Individual site audits in specific cases by WPX Malware Team
In reality, while a plugin like Wordfence reports possible attacks that it has blocked, WPX blocks the attacks without reporting them.
Site Migration To WPX Hosting Is Free And Email Is Included
Migration to WPX Hosting is completely free, provided you meet their Site Migration Policy. Website Migration is normally completed within 24 hours, once you provide all the information they need from you.
Your WPX Hosting account includes Email for free. However, it is highly recommended that you separate your email to a service like Google Apps or Zoho for enhanced performance because WPX’s main focus is on high performance WordPress hosting.
If you choose to use their Email service, WPX will need to know exactly what your previous hosting account’s current email setup is, (be it Google Apps/GMail, Mozilla Thunderbird, or MS Outlook) in order to smoothly transition your preferred form of email management.
Having this information allows WPX to help you make a fast, smooth and painless transition over to WPX Hosting.
When is Site Migration not free?
Regardless of the number or size of the sites you need to move, website migration to WPX Hosting is free. However, that does not apply if you wish to move an established website to a brand-new domain hosted with WPX.
As an example, let’s say that your current established site is pedrookoro.com and you want to create a brand new domain and site on pedrookoroauthor.com, with the content from pedrookoro.com (or a subdomain/subfolder). Such a migration is extremely time consuming. This is because of the huge amount of DataBase editing sometimes required for changing URLs.
WPX Hosting can migrate websites to a new domain name but this is a paid service and costs $98 excluding VAT.
Please be aware that migrations from one domain to another are not 100% guaranteed because of occasional encoded URLs in the DataBase. If this is the case, they will of course refund you the amount paid for that migration.
Site migrations are carried out 7 days a week and are normally completed within 24 hours.
What About WP Multisite Migrations?
If you are moving an existing Multisite installation from another hosting company to WPX. And you’re doing this as a Multisite installation, then that is a free migration that they will carry out for you.
However, if you’re moving a normal, single WP installation from another hosting company to WPX but (for whatever reason) you want this as a Multisite installation you will struggle. That’s because they do not offer that service, either as a free or a paid migration. In any event, such a migration is not recommended. It is likely to be highly problematic!
How To Migrate Your Website To WPX
Start by creating an account with them. Next, you will need to send them your current hosting account login details and the WordPress admin logins for the website(s) and blog(s) you would like moved. You can do this via a support ticket here: https://wpxhosting.com/tickets/new/
Remember to also to provide details of your current email setup, if you are not using Google Apps or Zoho!
Once the migration is complete, they will notify you when your NameServers can be changed at your domain registrar. DNS propagation (i.e. telling the Internet that your website has a new hosting location) normally takes 24 hours but in some rare cases, it can take up to 72 hours.
You can always track part of the domain propagation process by entering your URL here. You can find your site’s IP address in your Hosting Panel under the Servers Details section.
If you use Google Apps for your email, WPX Hosting will need to manually change your MX records. So inform them via a support ticket and they will get that sorted for you!
If you get stuck at any point, or aren’t sure how to proceed, just raise a support ticket with them, and they will answer ASAP.

The Business Plan

We recently migrated to WPX Hosting. Why did we move? What kind of experience have we had?
How Did We Get Here?
